Sonia Syed is a part 2 architect, researcher and writer with a keen interest in the listing and de-listing process. She has worked in practices in London, Copenhagen and Kuala Lumpur and in group research projects in Italy and the Amazon, gaining a strong understanding of the different conservation codes in each place due to its varying levels of rigidity.
In practice, Sonia focuses on embracing impermanence, whilst celebrating transformative states. This allows the value of fragments from different histories to be defined by their association with one another. This is applied in her built projects, notably, an active transformation of an existing bungalow into a research residency in Kuala Lumpur, ‘No.7’. Her built models throughout her time at the AA have also been exhibited at the Royal Academy and in Koln. Her work has also been published by the Architect’s Journal, Koozarch and the AA.
